I know this is one of the things roguelike deck builders do. And I like a lot of them!
But there’s… there ARE other possibilities. run-based is fine I guess. but the deck building is bugging me (just in a game designer way of “there has to be something else we can do here”)
but if they’ve reframed the “acquired abilities” as party composition, could be a good variation!
I’ll report back :D

@TerminalTilt@social.terminaltilt.com though maybe the deck builder IS the natural result of trying to make rpg combat “more interesting.” fundamentally just changing what’s available to do on each turn, so you have a wider possibility space while narrowing each turn’s choices. … but I have several ideas for NOT doing it this way, which I guess I need to try out! just wondering if anybody’s already made what I’m looking for
