@hannorein@mastodon.social @belehaa@wandering.shop observation: in some places, and ours is one, all that really matters to the student is the letter grade (maybe with a + or -), because that's what's used to determine GPAs.
I don't award grades like 79: I round up to 80 or down to 78 as I think appropriate. I don't think anyone would object if all your % grades were squarely in the middle of the letter-grade range: all your B+'s were 78 and all your A-'s were 82.

@nxskok@cupoftea.social Thirteen grades are still a lot! A+/A/A-/B+/B/B-/C+/C/C-/D+/D/D-/F. In most cases that really doesn't make sense. For example, if someone is getting their pilot license. Would you fly with someone who as a B- or a C+? Where's the line? Clearly the right answer is that a person is either competent to fly a plane or not. Also, I really like the point @belehaa@wandering.shop brought up elsewhere in this thread: You don't necessarily have to "fail" if you can't show competency -- you're just not a pilot.
