Really looking forward to the first large-scale OpenAI / Anthropic API outage, where 85% of the industry will be flopping around trying to remember how to hello-world on their own while execs google "how to write an email".

@jschauma@mstdn.social It strikes me that the combination of more severe heating (due to man-made global warming, obviously) and fuel insecurity is probably going to be a major stressor for these data centres. Sure, they can over-provision on AC and work out sweetheart deals for fuel supply for some time. But if you add in growing anti-DC sentiment, people getting better educated about the environmental impacts and how it's making everybody's electricity prices go up, along with a rise in fuel prices in general and resentment for how DCs seem to be getting better treatment by governments relative to people who need fuel to get to work and live, well... I guess we'll see how resilient and "too big to fail" this con really is...

@jschauma@mstdn.social I certainly do agree on this take. However, let me point you to the local models™ and the question of supply chain security. And more people than one would think might even remember how to hello world and begrudgingly get on with it until the outage is over or the local models™ are up. A lot of those you described will exist too and it will lead to the most hilarious failures and outages. Which will eventually lead to saner rules and usage practices.

@jschauma@mstdn.social Well, then just let's hope that they still alcan Google, as this ex-searchengine generates the answers with their own LLM. So, if that's down to things might get interesting...
