@ToniBarth@troet.cafe It's easy for any of us to say that about our own personal benefit. But when you look at the benefit for a whole group of people, plus the fact that some wildly exaggerated claims about the environmental impact of using generative models have been going around, it becomes less clear.

    @matt@toot.cafe Well, regarding the environmental claims, we do have some research material nowadays that, in my eyes, is pretty reliable. https://collections.unu.edu/eserv/UNU:10647/UNU-INWEH-Report-The_Env_Cost_of_AI-2026.pdf Obviously it isn't as easy, it is an ethical discussion after all. I still don't think that the solution to a systematic problem that is literally human-made is to have everyone and nature pay for it. If we were to fix the impact somehow, that'd be a different story.
