Feels extremely “Pilot”. Series in a nutshell, as I understand it at this point. This is set in the Korean War at an Army medical encampment. I’m going to have to refresh myself on the Korean War since my education kind of ignored that whole period of history mostly, because it makes it really hard to be pro-America to learn a single damn thing in detail about the Cold War. Anyway. The main characters are really good at their job and do subversive (by army standards) things for a combination of humanitarian reasons and hedonistic ones, and get away with it when they get caught by being very good at their extremely important jobs of saving people injured in the Korean War. It’s kinda House, but in the Korean War, and the main character is less of an asshole. Has women but is pretty godawful towards them. I knew it was gonna be like that for the first few seasons especially but ooooof. Multiple “jokes” that are just flat out sexual harassment. The plot of this pilot episode is that they drug their boss so they can auction off a weekend with one of the nurses to raise travel costs and tuition for a Korean kid who’s been helping them to go to medical school in the states. They rig the raffle so it goes to the Catholic Priest who obviously can’t go and is horrified. They get caught doing this when they aren’t supposed to but SUDDENLY A BUNCH OF INJURED SOLIDERS SHOW UP and the main characters save a bunch of lives and all is forgiven. I have a feeling more or less this exact thing is going to happen a lot. Hopefully less than I expect, we’ll see. I think it probably sounds like I’m very down about this, but it was pretty funny all that stuff aside and i understand it gets better from here. I’d give this alone, on its own merits, like a C. I don’t regret watching it but I’m not sure I’d recommend it either, at this point. Let’s find out how it’s gonna go.
