Having dealt with XML for 20+ years at this point, my opinion on it has largely evolved into: it's the worst markup language aside from all the others. In all seriousness, when done right, XML is actually quite nice. I think early frustration with XML came from developer decisions like improper/overuse of attributes, lack of XSD, and questionable structure decisions like repeating elements without containers.
