@janeishly@beige.party After 20 years, I'm in the process of closing my eBay account. I bought and sold tens of thousands of pounds worth of items on the platform over the years. Suddenly, they need a scan of my passport to pay out £14 to the same account I used for two decades. Yeah, right.

@janeishly@beige.party I had an idea. A decentralised AT Protocol based marketplace, where users sell to each other directly and are in control of their accounts, payment systems, shipping providers. We can call it FediBay or fBay for short.

@RaffKarva@sunny.garden @janeishly@beige.party We use Just Park and get about 1 booking a year but suddenly we have to go through a third party identification and verification system. They can forget it. I'm not giving all my data to some dodgy corporate

@RaffKarva@sunny.garden @janeishly@beige.party You could argue that the length of tenure of your account proves you are an adult, if that's what it's about. The 'money-laundering' issue doesn't wash either, because they already know your bank account details from way back. Ask them why they need to compromise your government document privacy and security by allowing them (or someone else?) to hold a copy of your passport. The questions probably won't help, but this needs to publicised more widely.

US Congress passed the "Know Your Customer" law, and that rippled out to the world, even places with bank secrecy laws. I remember thinking: You've got 10 years of me buying and selling without any issues. Surely that's more useful than a photo ID? But it's not about money, it's about tracking every dollar/euro as it moves around.
