Hah! I don't expect the B580 GPU in the household server will get much work outputting graphics, but a post-installation read through dmesg did bring to my attention that sundial's motherboard BIOS (ASRock Rack X570D4U-2LT2) does not support resizeable BAR at its current version, 1.20 (2020-09-29). I'll have to update it to 1.70 (2022-11-21), which will mean another reboot in the coming months. Ah well, it'll give me a chance to replace the power supply fan too while I'm at it.

Welp there was a power outage last Sunday morning that outlasted the UPS so I took advantage of the downtime to update Sundial's BIOS to v1.70. That made it possible to enable resizable BAR. (Turns out that wasn't enough to make the xe driver happy, I also needed to disable CSM ("compatibility support mode"?), but that was just one more reboot.) I still need to replace the power supply fan (or just the whole PSU), but that's at least one sysadmin task off the checklist!
