@beistanbul@mastodon.social @eteryu@infosec.exchange Android 17 disallowed apps without the Nearby Devices permission group from accessing the local network. For backwards compatibility, apps not yet targeting Android 17 are allowed to access the local network by default. No additional access is granted to apps compared to before. Targeting Android 17 eliminates the compatibility mode. Apps on the Play Store will be required to target Android 17 in around a year. This is how Android does backwards incompatible improvements.

@beistanbul@mastodon.social @eteryu@infosec.exchange If you're not on Android 17 then every app with network access has local network access. If you're on Android 17 then apps targeting Android 17 lack access to local networks by default. Apps not yet targeting Android 17 can now have it taken away after installation. GrapheneOS can eventually remove the backwards compatibility mode in a couple years. It doesn't make sense to immediately drop it and break compatibility with apps which aren't behind on target API level.
