It’s Disability Pride Month and I’m mourning one of our elders…. Alice Wong. Every year on July 1st she would talk about disabled rage. She would remind us that it’s ok to be angry at the eugenicist, capitalist, patriarchal system we’re trapped in. She would encourage us to embrace our disabilities AND our anger. She would give us permission to be our true selves… to refuse to hide for the comfort of others. She passed away last November but left an indelible mark on our community. I want to honour her this month by continuing the tradition she started and inviting all my disabled peers to be proud, unapologetically themselves and angry if that’s what they feel. Don’t hide. Don’t smile and say “I’m fine” when you’re in pain. Don’t settle for being treated as “less than”. Don’t let the bastards grind you down. #disability #ableism #eugenics #chronicillness #patriarchy #capitalism

@broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca What if your not angry though? I've been blind my whole life, was born this way, and I'm really just too tired to be angry. People are gonna think what they think of us, its really not my problem at the end of the day that I should feel any sort of pride or any feelings at all toward having a disability. I live my life day by day, that's it, that's all, why should I incorperate disability pride in my life when there is nothing to be proud of?

@broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca I very seldom talk about my disabilities. Too many people turn disability into weak. I won’t give them the satisfaction of that. Oh and I remember Alice. RIP. She was a wonderful advocate.

@broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca i think about her frequently, i will always remember her & look up to her. thanks for the lovely post honoring her, im sending a lot of love (i hope this doesnt sound weirdly patronizing :blobcatgooglyholdingitsheadinitshands: im disabled & chronically ill myself and mean all this from the bottom of my heart :neofox_melt_sob_heart:)
