Not gonna lie, reading this passage from @pluralistic@mamot.fr’s book #TheInternetCon on a jailbroken #Kindle (running #KOreader!) felt like a deliciously affirming act of resistance 💁🏻‍♀️ #KindleJailbreak #resist #BigTech #Calibre #SimpleUI

@_elena@mastodon.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr This has been going on in different flavors throughout my long adult life. It gets worse with "planned obsolescence" in sw and hw. Smart isn't a word I want in a product I buy because I know it's bs and I don't want "icloud" - both are euphemisms.

@_elena@mastodon.social Even I already jaiblreaked my old old old kindle (before I broke the display), I was (and will) only buy one running Android OS on it. I have an Onyx Boox Poke 3 The only thing which sucks, is that they stopped doing security update. but I don't connect to any public wifi with it. (and only go online for pushing books to it from my phone) So you can use Libby (Public library), Kindle app (NO), and any other Android ebook store app. So good. (But little bit more expensive than a kindle)

@_elena@mastodon.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr You don't need to jailbreak a Kobo. I ran KOReader on Kobo and Android. You don't need it for properly built ebooks. Cory ( @pluralistic@mamot.fr ) is mostly right, but the Kindle is a one purpose appliance. There is no need to install 3rd party SW on it or Kobo (not locked) if it is implemented properly. The issue is Amazon's Kindle ebooks (can't be read on other apps or ereaders, only Amazons), DRM and the KU program exclusive except for big authors. Monopolistic & surveillance!
