The disinformation campaign against the #Katyn massacre appears to be part of a wider Russian effort to rewrite history. Circassian émigré organisations have published an open letter protesting against a film broadcast on state media which distorts the history of the conquest of the #Caucasus in the 19th century – as a reminder, the Russian military campaign lasted almost half a century and resulted in the extermination of 95% of the region’s indigenous population. Most were massacred, whilst some fled to Turkey (“muhajir”). The contemporary Russian narrative first portrays the Circassian peoples themselves almost as savage subhumans to justify their conquest, and then speaks of “voluntary migration” and “geopolitical misfortune” when describing what was in fact #genocide and exile.
