I've heard several reports that #FIFA is really investing to try to get #soccer to take off in North America. Folks, you have #hockey fans in #Canada and #football fans in the #USA..... you're going to have to do something about all the babies crying about fake injuries if you want this sport taken seriously. 😭 It's very cringey. #WorldCup

@syntaxseed@phpc.social Point taken, and I wish embellishment to work the refs wasn't baked in the way it is. But, fans of sports where the athletes wear protective equipment from head to toe - who haven't been aggressively kicked by someone their size or bigger, running at full speed, wearing a hard & cleated boot should pause before judging what is or isn't fake (even when it is being hurt as opposed to being injured). The instant & intense pain, and accompanying dead leg are ofter real & significant.

@syntaxseed@phpc.social well, that's originally why the 1994 World Cup was awarded to the USA, contingent on starting a first-division pro league/MLS that now includes 3 Canadian teams. This year's edition introduces changes to reduce time wasting. I think video review also disincentivizes diving in the hopes of drawing fouls Some recent surveys have #soccer pretty high up in popularity. Many, but not all, of these fans are likely following teams abroad, not just local sides.
