It's not really so much that there is some sort of vast, global, nefarious conspiracy to digitally enslave people, at least, not really. It's really more that the entire system is directed at producing that result as a direct consequence of the idea that these people wholeheartedly believe in their right to own your data and do with it as they will for their profit, and they think this is virtue. That's what's truly terrifying about all this. They think they are the good guys.
