It's not really so much that there is some sort of vast, global, nefarious conspiracy to digitally enslave people, at least, not really.
It's really more that the entire system is directed at producing that result as a direct consequence of the idea that these people wholeheartedly believe in their right to own your data and do with it as they will for their profit, and they think this is virtue.
That's what's truly terrifying about all this. They think they are the good guys.

Don't get me wrong. Some of the characters involved really ARE that evil, like Peter Thiel, and the crowd that surrounds him. Look at Palmer Luckey and Marc Andreesen. These guys are criminally insane, IMO. And very unfortunately, there are a lot of technically proficient but philosophically stunted young people working themselves into a froth to make that vision come true, lured by the shiny promises of filthy lucre and elite status. https://www.tni.org/en/article/the-rise-of-the-techno-tyrants
