@davidrevoy@framapiaf.org >they refused because of trademark The fact they didn't ask/propose just forking/renaming the whole thing shows that it's just a bad excuse. >which is not something we can consider Points out they are in violation of either licenses/contracts. Similarly to why GPU manufacturers don't want anyone to be able to have their hardware working without a single binary blob (patent violations for accelerated encoding/decoding). You also have to remind that these entities have millions in fundings, the same way printer companies do. Not implementing drivers that are technically and legally working compatibly with a public operating system, meaning that it doesn't cost them as much as the proprietary ones as they don't have to ask permission, adds how bad of faith they are. Still thank you for your great work. Trying my own things on my side it's all so tiresome to try to reason with such people. I think it's notably why RMS just started GNU because of printer drivers, you can't negotiate with them or even have a fair exchange.

  • @mangeurdenuage@shitposter.world @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org forking is hard, writing the code is useless if there is no willingness to use it. It have to come from the community.

  • @mangeurdenuage@shitposter.world @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org The contempt for the users freedom isn't limited to patent concerns when it comes to video codec acceleration (if that was the concern, most of the peripheral software would be free software, aside from the video acceleration, which you can do just fine without). Rather the concern is that the user could have software freedom - which is why for example AMD has put in the software license of the "AMD-GPU-PRO-EULA", the following text; "You may not: … use, modify and/or distribute any of the Software so that any part becomes subject to a Free Software License"

@mangeurdenuage@shitposter.world @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org > patent violations for accelerated encoding/decoding It's an excuse and a really bad one. So bad, that if patent office would believe that, they would be obligated to revoke patent as incomplete.
