I know I've made Alpine work with my Fastmail account via IMAP, and a cursory glance shows that it can do some things with GMail. I don't know how straightforward the setup for that is, but it's a common enough program (descended from Pine, my first email experience circa 1994) that there are bound to be some tutorials somewhere.

@venya@musicians.today @brad@1040ste.net It has been literal decades but I recall using some open source app that spoke ActiveSync to drag Exchange mail to my local inbox and then just used mutt, and later did the same with Gmail. It was nice to separate the client from the syncing problem, and I think I just set up authenticated SMTP rules for the outbound. Long-winded way to ask, have you tried mutt? I can't imagine it no longer maintained.
