downtime is over, everything is up again.
i ended up taking the server outside to clean it and put the SAS HBA in and connected the SATA drives to it. for some reason the PCIe HBA was recognized perfectly fine, but the SATA drives connected to it were not recognized at all. No logs or anything to even start debugging the issue.
reseating the card and cables, and switching the port the cables were plugged into didn't change anything, so i decided to rollback to the previous setup again.
so meh, not happy :/

after having a quick look i noticed: i bought the wrong cable 🤦♂️ need a forward breakout cable, not a reverse one. already ordered a new one. so i suppose there will be more downtime next week
