And it's probably hard for westerners to see it because their strain of Christianity is much less ascetic (literally lads, stopping chocolate for lent or eating fish on a Friday is baby mode) and definitely doesnt have the same loading as it does in eastern orthodoxy, where it's *central*

@stavvers@masto.ai whoa, this is all fascinating. I grew up Evangelical Free and definitely regard their tendency towards emotional self-flagellation and anti-happiness stance as 'Merican, but I agree there are different flavors of it. TBH anytime a religion regards separation from "the secular world" as being important to purity, they're 1) probably abusive and 2) totes vulnerable to being pwned
