@EdCates@mastodon.social @MishaVanMollusq@sfba.social thanks to that little picture I just realized that when mammals evolve into the alligator niche they keep evolving into whales. There is something, an evolutionary dam, that has kept gators from evolving into dolphins. There are thousands of examples of parallel evolution when animals evolve into a similar niche, but very specifically not here... interesting!
