@EdCates@mastodon.social @MishaVanMollusq@sfba.social thanks to that little picture I just realized that when mammals evolve into the alligator niche they keep evolving into whales. There is something, an evolutionary dam, that has kept gators from evolving into dolphins. There are thousands of examples of parallel evolution when animals evolve into a similar niche, but very specifically not here... interesting!

@EdCates@mastodon.social Hypothesis: Alligators fill out every niche where alligator like animals fit. So any other animal which evolves into that niche has to compete against alligators and loses.
