I think I had some very naive impression that the journal editors were checking for sound methodology, bias, etc. But it sounds like that's never really been the case? In which case they totally were just gatekeeping for cash, I could see that. I appreciate the detailed explanation!

  • @nasamuffin@jorts.horse The editors make an initial judgement call on quality/relevance and then invite reviewers for in-depth assessment. Both should and often do check for sound methodology - but you essentially have to trust the journal that that happens. While neither editors nor reviewers are in it for the cash (editors are usually volunteers or on a fixed salary, reviewers are not paid), the journal publishers can make a lot of money - which skews editorial decisions.
