@nasamuffin@jorts.horse The editors make an initial judgement call on quality/relevance and then invite reviewers for in-depth assessment. Both should and often do check for sound methodology - but you essentially have to trust the journal that that happens. While neither editors nor reviewers are in it for the cash (editors are usually volunteers or on a fixed salary, reviewers are not paid), the journal publishers can make a lot of money - which skews editorial decisions.
