Challenge of openness (2005-2025): This is the challenge of adopting open science practices such as open access publishing, preprinting, preregistration, open peer review, open data and open metadata.
Over the past two decades, considerable progress has been made in addressing this challenge.

Challenge of curation (2015-2035): This is the challenge of making best use of the limited capacity in the peer review system. The most important development is the transition from the traditional 'review, then publish' approach to 'publish, then review' approaches.
