No surprise that very few people know what a Hakosuka is - it's not even an official designation. It is "hako" which is "boxy" and "suka" which is short for the Japanese mangling of "Skyline" (yes, it is very common for the Japanese to name cars words they cannot write or pronounce). I am a bit surprised nobody knows the MX-5 codenames - it's a popular car! The four series are just called NA, NB, NC and ND.

    The shocker should be the AE86. Why do a quarter of Mastodon know the codename of a 2-door Toyota that was only made for 4 years back in the 80s? The answer is of course because you're all Eurobeat weebs and love Initial-D - it was the hero's car used for tofu delivery and wicked drifting. The thing is, if that's why, then what about the FD. There were two prominent RX7s in Initial-D, and they all called them "the FC" and "the FD" to tell them apart. /shrug

    @TomF@mastodon.gamedev.place it's not a "mangling", it's a loan word. スカイライン, sukairain
