And now thanks to @chaosexanima@tech.lgbt I can show you how the retractation works: - you get a notification when someone quotes you - on their post, you have a new menu to remove their quote of your post - you confirm, and your quote is removed and shown as having been retracted - the quote is no longer displayed on the original post

This is built on FEP-044f (Consent-respecting quote posts, https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/fep/044f/fep-044f.md), which requires the quoted account to provide a stamp proving that they approved the quote. If there is no such stamp (or it has been invalidated), then Mastodon (and other software supporting the FEP) will not display the quote. If the quoted account does not support the FEP, no stamps will be issued, and the quote will not be displayed either, only the link (as before).

@renchap@oisaur.com @chaosexanima@tech.lgbt huh this is a neat idea. I'll have to read the proposal to learn more I guess I don't mind being cited and roasted lol

@renchap@oisaur.com @chaosexanima@tech.lgbt When I can decide if my post can be quoted by "retracting" my post from others quotes, can I just disallow all of my posts from being quoted at all? Or is that only a manual a posteriori action?

"I said it in public but I didn't say it." Just imagine if had introduced that feature first.

  • This only work between mastodon servers. Servers running software that already had quote post will be able to do so regardless if you accept or not the quote. You will not see it, but the quote will remain on the other person post because the software they run had quotes before and it has no compatibility for Mastodon proprietary quotes.

@renchap@oisaur.com I don't remember if I've seen an answer to this question: If I attempt to link a post on another Mastodon server will it be forcibly upgraded to a quote post, or will I have the option of simply making it a link?

@renchap@oisaur.com @chaosexanima@tech.lgbt The retraction feature is fantastic. Thank you to everyone who worked hard on making a request that so, so many people have asked for, and no other (at least to my knowledge) social media system has implemented to reduce abuse.

@renchap@oisaur.com @chaosexanima@tech.lgbt very nice and elegant approach. I also like the grey highlighting surrounding the hashtags

@renchap@oisaur.com @chaosexanima@tech.lgbt I had been opposed to quote posts, but this implementation has changed my mind. The ability to choose which posts are quotable, notification, and being able to remove the quote from specific users, removes abuse potential. Well done.
