The re-tuning is simply due to a refinement of what the target is. Like, you still have to get from A to B, but it's now clear that you can't do that shortcut through the swamp, or whatever.
It's very much Physics. The constraints inform the field of allowable math.
Sometimes the new math is uglier. That tends to cause a few losses in terms of the fanbase.
It's very different from something like String Theory, in my opinion.
