@bbech@mastodon.social Wow, I never considered that one file format could be noisier. I use a scheduler for Time Machine so that it only runs in the evening when I’m not around the hear all the crunching and grinding.

@kyle@keyboards.social eventually came across this. I don't fully get file systems (🛎) but where APFS puts the data on the drive is more scattered than HFS+ so the drive head has to move around a lot. For some reasons the benefits to APFS are really on SSDs and its a regression in HFS+. https://techradar.info/should-i-use-hfs-or-apfs-the-ultimate-macos-drive-guide/

@kyle@keyboards.social turns out I wasn't crazy because I thought I already knew that its best to format HDD as HFS+. When you select a drive for Time Machine it reformats it into APFS. What did you do to make it so it only runs on the evenings?
