@kyle@keyboards.social eventually came across this. I don't fully get file systems (🛎) but where APFS puts the data on the drive is more scattered than HFS+ so the drive head has to move around a lot. For some reasons the benefits to APFS are really on SSDs and its a regression in HFS+.
