The Trump administration is tearing up 900 deep-sea instruments that took a decade to install and $370 million to build — scrapping the world's most advanced ocean monitoring network to save $48m/year. Real-time data on AMOC stability, marine heat waves, ocean chemistry, commercial fisheries? Gone. Congress twice voted to save it. They did it anyway by bureaucratic fiat through the NSF. @mojo@aus.social Climate change may well destroy the Gulf Stream, freezing out the UK and Europe. These instruments let us measure it. But with no numbers, it isn't happening. Thanks Trump.

@mojo@aus.social its not too far of a stretch to say this will kill people in the future (i.e. contribute to higher global excess death from climate change). But its all good because Trump's backers has the capacity to withstand this and would like to have less people on the world.

This fulfils the Putin's request to remove any sensors that could detect the movements of the Russian submarine fleet. AFAIR this request to the US was proposed by the Viktor Liina in 2023 an telegram war-bloggers ridiculed it a bit. As we see now, it has been done.
