@yaxu@post.lurk.org yes, I agree. It was just an introductory lecture but some base assumptions & these basic (& disturbing) historical realities could have at least been addressed. This was in 2008 btw. [I already believed that what music is is elastic, & thought it obvious European tradition had uniquely imposed certain deliberate restrictions towards tonal harmonic systems of whatever period, but it’s true at that stage a Western-centric view probably dominated everyone listening too.]
