How can someone claim to be a #lotr fan and name their company #Palantir? Is it because Peter #Thiel sees himself as Saruman, who in Tolkien’s work represents the completely dumb tech bro, actually manipulated by the true master of the Palantir, namely Sauron, the actualvillain? How can someone be a tech enthusiast, an ultra-capitalist, and a Lord of the Rings fan when the moral of the story is precisely the opposite?

@art_of_goulwenr@mastodon.art the amount of capital hoarding enemies of humanity, that block fair distribution of wealth and try to gather all the power, that claim they loved Star Trek is also flabbergasting. They clearly didn't get the message intended.

  • @art_of_goulwenr@mastodon.art I think it is the same as how they interpret sci-fi. They almost take the polar opposite of the message because they feel more affinity to the bad guy that has all the power. The little seed of megalomania gets watered by it. In the modern era we let these sorts of people and their companies go so unencumbered by regulation and laws that they become a juggernaut.
