A lot of people in my mentions appear to have a cartoon understanding of libertarianism. So in the interests of adding nuance to that, even if it's tilting at windmills, for years I worked at the world's most prominent libertarian organization, where I founded and ran their project setting out the core ideas of libertarianism, and here is the statement of principle we put out. https://www.libertarianism.org/what-is-a-libertarian

@arossp@mastodon.social I understand Libertarians perfectly. They intentionally and actively destroy the world on purpose to further their short term goals, and then they blame liberals for the result. Sure- they will always lie and argue this isn’t what they do-but You can only piss down my neck and tell me it’s raining for so long. #AtlasShat

  • @arossp@mastodon.social Technically liberal also means progressive. But in todays political climate, the word "Liberal" refers to neo-liberals, which are basically conservatives with a few non-evil points of view. Likewise, even though libertarian means the pursuit of liberty, Libertarians are in the closet republicans who realize publicly identifying as republican would paint them in a bad light. Pointing out logical contradictions in party policy doesn't work on conservatives, because Hypocrisy is a FEATURE in the pursuit of more power for your in-group.

@arossp@mastodon.social unfortunately the Mises Caucus has destroyed any chance Libertarian nuance has of ever being heard again.

@arossp@mastodon.social Part of the issue with the misunderstanding is the american libertarian party, and its capture by pro-corporate and white nationalist interests. WHere 'you can't interfere with my liberty" means much more than "I can't interfere with yours". This leads to a libertarian party that argues that the liberty to sell spoiled food is sacrosant. Who talk about regulation in terms that no amount of harm justifies any regulation ever.
