Somebody I follow and who is a professional graphic designer is also in a similar pinch. He also says GIMP is not there yet, but he says Photopea has been useful when he's been away from his Adobe workstation https://www.photopea.com/

@waeiski@vis.social I think "lock-in" is the wrong take. The software is better at doing the job i need. I have an investment in the workflow but I'm prepared to relearn that, it's just that nothing else has the functionality. Maybe that is because once they gain commercial advantage they can blow the opposition away by throwing resources at development. An interesting downside of that is MS Office and the Paper Clip - they are in danger of overdoing it - and Photoshop is there now. IMHO.
