That early era of blogging that lots of the people being nostalgic are thinking of, coincided precisely with the era in which it was possible for an individual to make at least beer money off of banner ads. That funding source is never coming back, and for unrelated reasons I would argue that we don't *want* it to come back, but people have forgotten it was even there, and don't realize that without it, much of that blogging wouldn't have happened.

@zwol@hackers.town @sue@glasgow.social I started blogging in 1997 (before it was even called that!) and I was able to fund it by working a second job. I did make a little money from ads around 2007-2013 but it dried up completely. The second job continues to this day to fund my blogging on my own site... 1/2

(I do have a few affiliate links, which I call out, but it's always a thing I've actually used, and even then I make almost nothing from it but it does help keep things going. I'm still conflicted by it.) 2/2
