@ShadSterling@mastodon.social I don't think it hides it. You can still easily pick another. But let's be honest, new users complained a lot about that, and even I admit to being not entirely clear on why one server might be better than another. Ending up on a smaller instance has dire implications too going forwards, due to the way things have been built, and those are difficult to explain and not obvious even to people who have been here a while.

@ShadSterling@mastodon.social that's not to say I don't subscribe to the federated model. I think it allows for a lot of innovation. But having to pick from hundreds of barely distinguishable servers up front is quite a barrier, without giving an easy default. Also many share a tone of justifying how things are, because 'we don't need growth'. But why would we not aim to be the best place to be online?
