@ShadSterling@mastodon.social that's not to say I don't subscribe to the federated model. I think it allows for a lot of innovation. But having to pick from hundreds of barely distinguishable servers up front is quite a barrier, without giving an easy default.
Also many share a tone of justifying how things are, because 'we don't need growth'. But why would we not aim to be the best place to be online?

@Setok@attractive.space how is joining an instance dedicated to a community you’re at home in “dire”? I think the key to the problem is the servers being indistinguishable; we need better ways to distinguish. I don’t think it’s an unreasonable concern that having almost everyone on the same instance will undermine the federated model, and I think they could do better than to amplify that concern by encouraging that concentration
