@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net I had very similar setup, the old PC continued as a router, but with up to date distro. The ADSL bridge was a lot cheaper, but there was a huge push for the router model because its NATing was sold as a security feature.
Anyway, I still remember the amazing moment when I did not have to dialup to access the net. Stuff could run downloading in the background without having to worry if someone will lift the phone or if the phone bill will be delivered with a fork lifter!

@apz@some.apz.fi definitely! the "always on" aspect was revolutionary at the time, even if a decent size download could still take a day or more, the fact the connection was always there meant you could just leave stuff going without worrying about those things (or blocking incoming phone calls)
