Usually the first play through aren’t bad with long starts, but I still loathe them. But I’ll keep that in mind because I think Final Fantasy X is one of the FF games I wanted to try.
I almost wonder for the graphics if it’s because they got all these new processing power. N64 to GameCube was a pretty major jump, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it took them a while longer than a generation how too really make it look good

Iirc, FFX is a ~200h game if you go for optionals, ~80h if you focus mostly on the main story. So if the start takes maybe 3h (at least how long I go about without rushing and without challenges), the start doesn't seem _too_ long. About looking weird, could be, yeah. Apparently from the SNES to the N64 and PS1 was a major leap too, which gave all those experimental 3D games;
