I grew up food insecure and neglected, and once I got out of that situation, I taught myself quickly how to cook, both to save money and also because I just really wanted to feel like I not only deserved food, but good food. So, I know what it's like to not eat good food on a regular basis, and to just generally go without, but I don't know what it's like when you have your needs met, but you don't have the skills to eat without *good* food more or less whenever you want-- again, just because you lack the skills. Because eating out must be expensive. So what are the alternatives like? The more I'm typing this, the more I'm realizing how much this can be the experience of people with various disabilities, as well, and not simply a skills issue. I know it seems like such a banal inquiry of thought, and might seem obvious to other people, but it's not obvious to me.

Also, full disclosure, I smoked right before I posted this. But it's not super obvious, right? I hope I didn't put my foot in my mouth lol

@revoluciana@chaosfem.tw Just for relevant sociological interest. I know someone who definitely grew up in an upper-class family. One day Dominos pizza came to their house with like a big award and camera crew because his parents had fed the family Dominos Pizza literally every single day that year, and they had bought the most Dominos pizza of anyone in their state. I consider this neglect and abuse, and I think he does too now that he's been through enough therapy.

  • @revoluciana@chaosfem.tw Food insecurity baby here as well. I am not skilled at cooking due to disability. Eating out is about the only time I have “nice” food. I cook stuff and we don’t eat out often, but… well. It is what it is. And some things from my childhood and college years, while trashy, are comfort foods. I hate Mac n cheese but Hamburger Helper beef stroganoff is *chef kiss*
