Today I recapped my Game Gear and replaced the power board. The oridinal capacitors leak and fail and may corrode the board. Now, instead of being completely dead, it shows some horizontal stripes on the screan and makes suffering noises. I guess I came too late and replacing the caps wasn&#39;t enough anymore. I will need to investigate further...

Ok, I found a dead via on the audio board and that brought sound back! So the system is alive, and only the LCD is dead. I started messing with it and almost electrocuted myself with the backlight power supply. So I'm carefully closing that up and ordering a mod rn replacement display that doesn't involve dangerous voltages. The playing experience won't be quite the same, the screen will be too good but also the weird 160x144 original resolution doesn't scale well to 320x200 replacement displays

@pulkomandy@mastodon.tetaneutral.net I'm sad as I sold all my Game Gear stuff a decade or so ago and nowadays all these repair kits are around. I miss that thing. #gamegear
