@schrottkatze@social.treehouse.systems @fossheim@front-end.social oh I see. so IMPLIES a lot more to agents that you would otherwise have to explicitly define in your h1 class? edit: I write front end but I don't do styling so I've not recently had to notice what the practical distinction between em was. Either way I somehow get a bigger section heading/title and that's as far as I care.

@tezoatlipoca@mas.to The most important reason to use semantic HTML elements like , , etc. is they make the web understandable and useable by people with disabilities using assistive technologies like screen readers. The browser uses the HTML to create not only the DOM that's visually rendered but also an accessibility tree accessed through the operating system's accessibility APIs. There are other benefits, like having basic usability when there's a CSS error, when content is reused elsewhere like RSS feeds, and when people use a Reader Mode in their browser. #a11y @schrottkatze@social.treehouse.systems @fossheim@front-end.social

@tezoatlipoca@mas.to Hey, I remember those Geocities days! Can you still remember your URL? I don't know what your time & money situations are, but I found that coursework in accessible web design helped me understand semantic HTML. I took Deque courses but only because my employer provided them. @SaraSoueidan@sarasoueidan.dev also has a course that looks engaging. Also https://a11yweekly.com is a great newsletter that often has articles about semantic HTML. Those are good refreshers. @schrottkatze@social.treehouse.systems @fossheim@front-end.social
