@Mer__edith@mastodon.world so what does this mean about #whatsapp ? From this article: BBC News - India-Pakistan online love story that ended in jail https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-64740767 How could a so-called encrypted messaging app lead the police to someone? Not so secure as all that, I guess.

@elliek@halifaxsocial.ca end to end encryption protects the contents of messages but doesn't protect intimate metadata (like profile info, who's talking to whom, etc.). WhatsApp uses end to end encryption for messages, but doesn't protect metadata. Signal protects both.

@elliek@halifaxsocial.ca @Mer__edith@mastodon.world @WhatsApp@mastodon.social Whatsapp is not an entirely encrypted messaging app. It encrypts only the content of the messages which lets them claim to be one. But in reality this is the only piece Whatsapp encrypts. It has all the metadata, for example, such as who calls whom and when with exact timestamps, open and available. Whatsapp can and will lead the police, government, cartels, or whatever to you from one of your contacts.
