I mean smother. Anyone who rocks the boat must be silenced quietly and swiftly on the regular. It's present in families, work culture, and so many other arenas. It's inherent because it's difficult to even put into words while it's happening. It occurs in the words that people don't say, much like a deprivation of oxygen.

It gets to be like the joke about nailing Jell-O to a wall. If you can't get through to the people closest to you, how are you to get through to a total stranger? (And now I'm estranged from most family for reasons peripheral to this. So it's possible that I had the question backwards all along.)
