@4censord@unfug.social I'm pretty sure school taught me all of those things besides the last two, but now I don't know how to do any of those skills, since I never used them over the past 15 years or so

@4censord@unfug.social Although I rarely do anything more than sew on a button, I CAN do more major work. The legacy of a mum who had three boys and one girl, and made sure we could all sew and iron before we left home, and I am now 60, so that was a bit radical for Britain at the time.

@4censord@unfug.social If there were enough options for surveys to add "I can assemble clothes by modifying a given pattern", I would add that. It's a big gap between using a pattern as given and making without a pattern at all. Most of my sewing has involved finding patterns that were close to what I was going for, and combining or modifying in some other way.

@4censord@unfug.social wasn't 100% sure on the "without a pattern" one because when I make stuff the first step is to draft a pattern from scratch, like I don't think I could just wing it and cut the fabric freehand

  • @4censord@unfug.social I picked crochet, major alterations and assembling clothing because although I rarely do those, am rather bad and need a lot of time, I CAN still do them. If I have to. But knitting and minor fixes are really the things I would casually say "I can"

@4censord@unfug.social I'd have expected more people to be able to knit than to do major sewing!

@4censord@unfug.social I am very good at making patterns and resizing them, but my wife does all the sewing on the sewing machine. So my input is all at design and patterning with sometimes some cutting. She can do all of the things though.

  • @4censord@unfug.social This week I have shortened trousers for my brother. About to shorten some for me. I have a granny square crochet in progress to make a hat and a knitted black v neck jumper waiting to be finished. Too hot to do either. I have some material ready to make a skirt (simple gathers) and matching loose blouse. No pattern needed. Been waiting for some nice weather to wear it. About to alter a dress for my daughter. Just Finishing altering a linen shirt to a short unlined jacket with cotton lace inside hem sleeve edges and collar. Added patch pockets. ( I am retired)

@4censord@unfug.social I used to be able to crochet, but could not really start any more - I would need to start as a novice again. I can knit. I think I could pick it up again quickly - although I haven't done any for 40 years or more. I can do small repairs - I sew patches on my battle jacket. I can make some tweaks, but wouldn't claim to do it well.
