California amended their AB-1856 Age Attestation law to exclude open source software using the Colorado exemption example. Thank you to the folks in California advocating for open source. https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB1856&utm_source=chatgpt.com

@carlrichell@fosstodon.org This is also an important teachable moment. Even corporate Linux distributions don't need to include an age form, and why is that? Not because *they* stood up to bad legislation, but because a broader and more principled community did so. It turns out, we *don't* need to preemptively comply with fascism, and it leads to worse outcomes when we do. Which we all *told* corporate vendors up front. So maybe next time, we can skip a few steps and understand our bargaining power as something we're obligated to use, and reasonably likely to win with.
