@cstross@wandering.shop @gatesvp@mstdn.ca the UK did not have to wrestle with climate change. I wonder how many cities the US will have lost in two generations, New Orleans is beyond salvage, and without FEMA or a working gouvernement, Florida won’t last that long. New York can barely fix a tunnel.

@thias@mastodon.social @gatesvp@mstdn.ca The UK had its infrastructure thoroughly trashed during WW2, and then had to repay war loans to the USA (no Marshall Plan aid here). And we're getting climate change here, too …

@thias@mastodon.social @cstross@wandering.shop honestly, in some ways FEMA has been part of the problem. Via things like flood insurance, they've enabled a lot of building in regions that are already unsafe to inhabit right now. Lack of federal government leadership has definitely been a problem here. But local leadership has not really helped a ton either. They have been more than happy to authorize people to live in unsafe places.
