@TheGentleKlingon@mastodon.art yeah, I'm moving toward self-hosting for a couple of specific things, and like -- no, you know what, I feel pretty good about it as a metaphor. maybe if you want to be less extreme it would be like me telling someone who's never baked before that you can totally make sourdough at home, it's easy, don't be lazy, here's a list of ingredients, good luck!

@titania@retro.pizza @TheGentleKlingon@mastodon.art I think this hits for me because I *do* occasionally have that impulse, as a professional food person, to think 'oh my God just cook it yourself' before dialing back to reality. Recognizing how silly that is, is what the self-host crowd is missing, I think. I'm working on changing my reliance on big tech but I'm definitely not prepared to self-host everything tomorrow any more than the random non-baker is prepared to make macarons.
