bless. someone didn't read past the first post. I suppose I'll put it here so it's not nested in the replies: I AM WORKING TO SET UP SELF-HOSTING AN ALTERNATIVE FOR DISCORD AS WELL AS A FORUM FOR LOCAL FRIENDS OF MINE THAT ARE SICK OF REDDIT. If you're like, "this analogy is horrible and you should feel bad", maybe read the rest of the thread. ๐ซก

@titania@retro.pizza As someone who does have the technical expertise to do this if anyone who doesn't have a PhD in synthetic chemistry or extensive pharma industry experience says "how hard could it be?" I'd like to meet them in a dark alley while armed with a couple of lead donuts in a bag.

@titania@retro.pizza I don't think that's an apples-to-apples comparison. Equipment for self-hosting starts around 100 USD (Raspberry Pi or the like), so this isn't really a big deal. Concerning the expertise, the challenge is not that it requires years of study before you can remotely think about getting something done. But it requires dealing with the inner workings of computers that many people simply don't want to deal with. Maybe something like @freedomboxfndn@mastodon.social is a reasonable middle ground, as it aims to abstract the low-level stuff away.
