I don't think that's an apples-to-apples comparison. Equipment for self-hosting starts around 100 USD (Raspberry Pi or the like), so this isn't really a big deal.
Concerning the expertise, the challenge is not that it requires years of study before you can remotely think about getting something done. But it requires dealing with the inner workings of computers that many people simply don't want to deal with.
Maybe something like @freedomboxfndn@mastodon.social is a reasonable middle ground, as it aims to abstract the low-level stuff away.

@hweimer@fediscience.org I'll be using Yunohost for what I'm doing; I'm happy to pay to use a VPS. it wasn't meant to be an apples to apples comparison, nor was it entirely serious -- the point was mostly to make people think. Which I suppose it has done, though of course people are always going to reply without reading the entire thread...
